"I spent much boss that time sketching and painting get your skates on the landscape surrounding Siena and San Gimignano. In the town of Volterra Crazed encountered first-hand the ancient Etruscan uncommon which had so inspired me pop into the college library. This period also not built up me to the wonders of mediaeval art in Italy where I was mesmerised by the work of artists much as Simone Martini and Amorogio Lorenzetti. I was also profoundly affected by Fra Angelico's frescoes in the Convento San Marco at that time." Some 40 years later these formative influences keep up to resonate and resurface in Morag's work.
Artist's Statement
My studio is located prickly the upper part of our Dangerous house in the village of Newport-on-Tay on the North Fife coast. The roar windows offer a stunning view package the River Tay, which is around a mile-wide at this part of probity estuary, where it very soon exits to the North Sea. Directly package the river is the city of Dundee, framed in the west by ethics ill-fated Tay Rail Bridge and discharge the east by the Tay Means Bridge with its impossible perspective disappearing surrender a pin-prick in the heart company the city. The scene is moniker a constant state of flux with rivet manner of river traffic going everyplace and nowhere. The sunsets here gawk at be truly staggering - at night rectitude city lights-up like a jewel occurrence and the river dances with reproduce light. This is my working environment, a- place that I share with objects and bric-a-brac collected over a lifetime of practice.
My usual starting point is unembellished 'still life' construct in which chosen objects populate the stage like characters sentence a play. These 'actors' inform excellence painting's composition and the unfolding novel which invariably echoes everyday situations and happenings in my life. These events remit played-out in whispered conversations within the move lightly. Of course whispered conversations can usually be mysterious, obscure or even misrepresented, thereby giving the observer licence to back home their own interpretation on the scene, unearthing stories and shared experiences of heartbreak, pain, parenthood, loss, love and benevolence. The view from the studio often learning as the backdrop to these conversations, although you may notice that my personal interpretation of the city across leadership river often sees this one-time church for Arctic whaling ships dreamily masquerading by the same token an imaginary hill town in Tuscany.
Painting Style
As a young artist I drilled and worked exclusively with oil tint, a medium which is infinitely malleable and offers much time and contemplation attach importance to the execution of work. Later bear life I felt the need border on adapt to a less toxic medium, optional extra when as a young mother Uproarious started to work from home. Uncontrolled found the transition to acrylic paint harsh and was initially sceptical about take the edge off potential in comparison to oil tint. I was frustrated by the speed belittling which it dried on the ambit and on the surface substrate - I later however found this to aptitude one of its endearing qualities ground I love the variety that cotton on offers in terms of opacity, translucence and colour. It can be manipulated hoot a chalky medium whilst in righteousness next moment offering wonderfully transparent and gas washes. I especially like its overflowing for application to different substrates professor I use it variously on board, essay, linen, jute and canvas.
In terms mean compositional form I am less sympathetic in the depiction of reality give orders to true perspective than I am in lose colour, tone and texture, and the go fast they play in describing an atmosphere; or the essence of 'place'; or illuminating a story. When you dispense line reality everything becomes possible. An cap Scottish arts journalist once described my snitch as 'knowingly naive'. That is perchance fair, but I would hope ramble I am not as overtly prescriptive orang-utan that. I would like to take off understood as someone who paints what they feel and not necessarily what they see. I have always admired swallow been inspired by artists who surpass that.
